City Farmers Nursery NewsCity Farmers Nursery and Local Champions
Marshall Elementary School Gets Lawn City Farmers Nursery has been a proud partner with the San Diego City School District for well over two decades. One cause began our work with neighborhood schools: the landscaping and field restoration of Marshall Elementary, just around the corner from the nursery. Red tape, changing administration and a tight budget have been among the myriad of hurdles between a desolate field and green lawns for these 900 kindergarten through 5th graders. We’ve donated sod and irrigation equipment and a whole lot of support for this amazing school and their tireless teachers. A mighty congratulations to Mr. Bill Mora who’s been with Marshall since the 1970’s for championing this cause. We’re happy that we’ve finally reached this monumental goal together for our kids! The next step? Re-commissioning their vegetable garden!
Wounded Warrior Receives Garden We’ve recently joined hands with the inspirational and amazing Operation Homefront and the Marine Corp’s Wounded Warrior Program—each privately funded outreach programs formed to provide assistance to thousands of military families and returning soldiers. A 23 year-old Marine, husband and father who lost both legs and partial use of both hands in Iraq was returned home after a grueling stay at Walter Reed Hospital. His Southern roots meant a love for gardening and we were proud to provide him and his family a wheelchair accessible raised garden for his back-yard along with all the supplies and tools he’d need to add some fun and enjoyment to his recovery. We encourage each of you to step outside your busy lives and give Operation Homefront a call to see how you can help (866) 424-5210 or visit www.operationhomefront.net/sandiego
Donation Center Established at City Farmers An easy, year-round way you can help those in need and the environment involves our new “Green Neighbor = Good Neighbor” drop-off center, located at the front of our parking lot. You come in for plants, but we encourage you to bring gently used clothing items and shoes on your visit, as well. Our big, all-weather red bin is a hub for the Salvation Army collection center and is a convenient, earth-friendly way to ensure your gently-worn items are used to their full potential. Unlike out-of-the-way drop-off points, this is on your route, and only requires you bag and tie your items before you drop them off. The “Green Neighbor = Good Neighbor” bin is open during our business hours: Monday-Saturday 8am-5pm.
