Spring 2026 Chick Breeds

Each year, when conditions are safe, we bring in chickens, in limited quantities. Here are the breeds we’re looking forward to welcoming.

  • After arriving, we keep our chicks to ensure everyone is healthy and stable to go home.

  • Chicks are sexed and vaccinated.

  • We ask that you remember chickens are social creatures and should be in flocks of minimum three birds.

  • As you integrate chicks into flocks, please do so safely.

Without further delay, here are our chicken breeds and one duck we’ll have available.

Buff Orpington

Buff Orpingtons are a classic favorite among backyard chicken keepers, admired for their golden buff feathers and affectionate nature. These large, soft-feathered birds are known for their calm temperament and make wonderful pets as well as productive layers. Females usually weigh about 7–8 pounds and produce medium to large brown eggs consistently.

Their docile demeanor and cold-hardy build make them well-suited for a variety of environments. Buff Orpingtons are also known to go broody, making them great mothers for those looking to hatch their own chicks. Gentle, beautiful, and dependable, they’re a top pick for both new and experienced poultry keepers.

Black Star chickens are a dependable, hardy hybrid breed known for their excellent egg production and easygoing nature. These birds have glossy black plumage with hints of copper or gold on their necks and chest, especially in females. Hens typically weigh around 5–6 pounds and are reliable layers of large brown eggs.

They have a calm and friendly temperament, making them great for beginners and families alike. Black Stars adapt well to a variety of climates and are efficient foragers, whether on pasture or in confined spaces. Their combination of productivity, resilience, and gentle personalities makes them one of the best all-around choices for a backyard flock.

Duck Breed: Blue Runner

Blue Swedish ducks are a hardy, dual-purpose breed known for their striking steel-blue plumage accented by a white bib on the chest. Females typically weigh around 6–7 pounds and have a calm, steady temperament, making them excellent additions to mixed flocks.

They are good layers, producing 130–180 large white to tinted eggs per year. Blue Swedish ducks are adaptable foragers and thrive in both free-range and penned environments.
